Whirlwind Discovery

The Whirlwind discovery is located across blocks 205/21a and 205/22a in the West of Shetland, to the north of Lancaster. This discovery is geologically similar to Lancaster although it is structurally deeper. Hurricane accelerated its well planning work on the Whirlwind Discovery to secure a geophysical and environmental site survey over the proposed Whirlwind well location in 2010. The survey enabled Hurricane to commence the Whirlwind well on completion of the Lancaster sidetrack. Despite encountering oil shows in the overlying limestone, hydrocarbon presence could not be proven or disproven within the basement prior to the weather-induced termination of operations. However, the results from Whirlwind were sufficiently encouraging to justify suspending the well, with the objective of re-entry and further evaluation in 2011.
